Centre stones get the attention, but small diamonds do much of the work in a piece. Melee frames a halo, lines a band and fills a pavé setting. Matched pairs make earrings look balanced. When these stones are sourced well, nobody notices them. When they're sourced badly, everyone does.
This guide covers what to specify, what to check and what to ask your supplier so bulk orders arrive looking the way you expected.
What is melee?
Melee (pronounced "mel-ee") refers to small diamonds, generally under about 0.20 carat. They're usually sold by size in millimetres or by the parcel rather than as individual certified stones. Typical uses include:
- Pavé settings on bands and bezels
- Halos around a centre stone
- Side stones flanking a centre diamond
- Accent details in pendants, earrings and bracelets
- Repairs, where you need a stone to match one already in the piece
Baguettes and other small fancy shapes fall into the same category, and are popular for channel settings and shoulder accents.
What is a matched pair?
A matched pair is two stones chosen to look identical when set side by side. They're most important for earrings and studs, but also for three-stone rings, drop pendants and any design that depends on symmetry.
A true match means more than the same carat weight. For round stones, check:
- Diameter: two stones of equal weight can measure differently depending on cut depth
- Color: a shift of one grade is often visible when the stones sit next to each other
- Clarity: similar inclusion type and position, so neither stone looks noticeably "busier"
- Cut and proportions: matching depth and table, so both stones reflect light the same way
For fancy shapes like oval, pear, marquise and emerald, add length-to-width ratio. Two ovals of the same carat weight can have quite different outlines. The ratio is often the difference between a pair that looks matched and one that looks slightly off.
How to write a good sourcing request
Vague briefs lead to disappointing parcels. Before you enquire, decide on:
- Shape and size. Give millimetre dimensions rather than just carat weight, especially for melee.
- Quantity. State the number of stones or total carat weight you need.
- Color and clarity range. Give the range you'll accept, such as G–H colour and VS clarity, and be clear about what's the minimum.
- Natural or lab grown. Say which you need. Lab grown often lets you use a higher quality grade within the same budget.
- Drilled or undrilled. This matters for beads, charms and connectors.
- Tolerance. Tell us how much size variation is acceptable across the parcel. For pavé, tight consistency matters far more than it does for scattered accents.
- Certification. Melee is normally sold uncertified. If you need reports for larger matched pairs, mention it up front.
What to check when a parcel arrives
- Size consistency. Measure a sample across the parcel, not just the top of the packet.
- Colour under neutral light. Compare stones on a white surface under daylight-balanced lighting, not against a warm shop bulb.
- Cut quality. Poorly cut melee looks dull even when the colour and clarity grades are good.
- Overall consistency. The parcel should look like one coordinated lot, not a mix of sources.
- Matched pairs side by side. Face them up, then check from the side profile as well.
Do all of this before you start setting. It is much cheaper to raise a problem before a stone is in a mounting.
Ways to keep bulk costs sensible
- Buy calibrated sizes where your designs allow it. Standard millimetre sizes are easier to source and usually more competitively priced than one-off dimensions.
- Order for your next few projects, not just the current one. This makes it easier to keep a consistent look across a collection, especially with pavé.
- Ask about mixed quality tiers. Stones set deep in a pavé bed or hidden by prongs don't always need the same grade as an exposed side stone.
- Consider lab grown for accents. The lower price per carat can noticeably reduce the total cost of a heavily pavé piece.
