Ruby is a tough and durable gem, and the only natural gemstone harder than Ruby is diamond.

  1. Colour: All the three factors- hue, saturation, and tone affect the quality of a ruby. The primary hue of ruby should be red along with medium darkness (tone) and have an intense red hue (saturation)
  2. Clarity: The more radiant and transparent a Ruby is, the higher its value.  The fewer or smaller the inclusions, the higher the ruby’s price.
  3. Weight and Size: Fine-quality rubies over one carat are very rare, but commercial-quality rubies are commonly available in a wide range of sizes. The price per carat goes up significantly for ruby as it increases in size.

Treatments of Rubies:

These days treatment given to ruby is not an uncommon thing. Save yourself from buying fake rubies. The most common treatment given is the application of heat to improve its color. Another most common treatment is lead glass filling of rubies thereby improving the transparency of the stone and making the unsuitable rubies fit for applications in jewelry.

Types of ruby stones:

  1. Burmese ruby: Typically found in Myanmar, is usually dark red in color due to the high influence of the material chromium. Should check for any blemish marks in order to distinguish between fake and real ruby.
  2. Thai Ruby Gemstone: They stand in second after Burmese ruby for the same reason i.e. high level of chromium in them.
  3. Tanzania Rubies: On the ground, their appearance might be similar to hessonite stone. As the size of the stone increases, the color fades away thus making it less valuable.
  4. Madagascar Rubies: The rubies found basically in two areas one at region Andilamena and Vatomandry.
  5. Afghanistan Ruby Stone: The color of the original ruby stone found in this area ranges from light red to dark red in color.
